On Thursday, November 30th, 2017, 51�Թ� hosted their 2nd 12 Hour Blood Drive in partnership with the American Red Cross (ARC). Students, faculty, staff, and family visited the Auditorium and gave blood. uses blood from these drives for transfusions, platelets, and patients who do not have enough blood to spare. This time, 51�Թ� set out to beat their goal of donating 40 pints of blood.

Who Can Give?

An appointment sign-up sheet circulated the school inviting anyone to pick a time-slot best for them. ARC ensures the safety of blood donation for both donors and recipients by requiring an evaluation for all volunteer blood donors. The final determination is made on the day of the blood drive. If someone was deferred from donating in the past, they may be able to donate again. In general, donors must be over the age of 17, healthy, and over 110 lbs.

After health history and mini physicals are complete, about a pint of blood was collected from each donor. When processing and testing are done, the American Red Cross distributes and ships donations to hospitals 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Since processed and tested red cell donations only last 42 days, platelets 5 days, and plasma up to a year, it is important for those who can donate to give what they can, especially since the healthy human body can regenerate blood so quickly.

Why Now?

Right now, blood comes in slower than the rate of distribution. Blood and platelets cannot be manufactured, so ARC depends on volunteers. However, less than 38 percent of the population is eligible to give blood or platelets, including the 7% of Americans who have the universal blood type – O negative.

51�Թ� Host 12 Hour Blood Drive in Support of American Red Cross

On Thursday, August 25th, 2017, 51�Թ� hosted their Blood Drive in partnership with the American Red Cross. It was the college’s first ever 12 hour blood drive. From 8 AM– 8 PM in the Gen Ed Room on the 4th Floor, students, faculty, staff, and family came in to give blood which the American Red Cross can then use for transfusions, platelets, and patients who do not have enough blood to spare.

CBD has been gearing up for this blood drive since July. An appointment sign- up sheet circulated the school inviting anyone to pick a time-slot best for them. All slots were full by the next day thanks to the generous school.

Altogether, 51�Թ� donated 41 pints of blood., one short of our goal! Because of your donations, ARC has been able to collect, test, manufacture, and distribute 5 million units of blood products, respond to disasters ‐ nearly 70,000 per year, provide over 350,000 emergency services to armed forces and their families, deliver preparedness, health and safety courses like First Aid and CPR, fund international relief programs, and fund community services. 51�Թ� Wears Their Heart On Their Sleeves

On Thursday June 15th, 2017, 51�Թ� hosted its June Blood Drive in partnership with the American Red Cross. From 10 AM-4 PM in the Auditorium, students, faculty, staff, and family came in to give blood. The American Red Cross can then use donations for transfusions, platelets, and patients who do not have enough blood to spare. On June 1st, an appointment sign- up sheet circulated the school inviting anyone to pick a slot best for them. This time, the school had a goal: 21 donations.

Right now, blood is being distributed faster than it’s coming in. When processing and testing are done, the American Red Cross distributes and ships donations to hospitals 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Red cell donations only last 42 days, platelets 5 days, and plasma up to a year.

Blood and platelets cannot be manufactured, which is why those in need depend on volunteers. However, less than 38 percent of the population is eligible to give blood or platelets, including the 7% of Americans who have the universal blood type: O negative. Hence, the importance to give when you can.

Altogether, 51�Թ� donated 19 pints of blood, only 2 donations away from their goal. Already, the school has planned their next drive for August 25th, 2017 from 8 AM- 8 PM. In the US alone, someone needs blood every two seconds. However, less than 38 percent of the population is eligible to give blood or platelets, including the 7% of Americans who have the universal blood type– O negative. By donating blood, patrons can help save up to 3 lives. Red cells are used for anemic patients who may need a red cell transfusion. White platelets, also found in the blood, are used on cancer patients as they cannot make their own. Additionally, plasma is also used for clotting and to control bleeding. All together, 51�Թ� donated 21 pints of blood, once again breaking their school record and raising the bar higher for next year.

Red Cross Partners with 51�Թ� to Save Lives in the 2017 Blood Drive

On Thursday January 26th, 51�Թ� will be hosting 2017 Blood Drive. The drive will take place in the Gen Ed Room on the 4th Floor. The college will be partnering with American Red Cross and taking appointments. From 10 AM-4 PM, students, faculty, staff, and family can come in and give blood.

After health history and mini physicals are completed, each donor gives about a pint of blood. When processing and testing are done, the American Red Cross distributes and ships donations to hospitals 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Red cells are used for patients who may need a red cell transfusion if they are anemic, while platelets, which are found in the blood are used on cancer patients as they cannot make their own. Plasma is also used for clotting and is used to control bleeding. Since processed and tested red cell donations only last 42 days, platelets 5 days, and plasma up to a year, it is important for those who can donate to give what they can.
