Dear Students,

We want to thank you for your positive attitude, commitment to your education and ability to adjust to current environment, all while pushing forward to becoming a healthcare professional.

Our community has truly been tested over the past several weeks and we&/blog/category/career-services/feed/8217;ve risen to the occasion. We&/blog/category/career-services/feed/8217;ve vacated our campus, classrooms and socially distanced from our friends, faculty, classmates and colleagues. We&/blog/category/career-services/feed/8217;ve learned new ways of engaging with each other and we&/blog/category/career-services/feed/8217;ve adopted new technology, new ways of thinking, and new ways of learning. Despite the obstacles thrown at us by the pandemic, we&/blog/category/career-services/feed/8217;ve persevered.

Amid this difficult time, we&/blog/category/career-services/feed/8217;re planning for the future. We are working to proactively create a plan to return to campus, but only when local ordinances and public health officials deem opening our campus advisable, as the safety, health and welfare of our stakeholders is a priority.  All of the College&/blog/category/career-services/feed/8217;s courses will continue to be taught remotely until further notice. All faculty and staff will continue to work remotely and remain accessible for all students during normal business hours.  Based on the unique learning needs of our programs, and with due consideration of the facts related to COVID-19, we are exploring the option for certain programs to develop plans to safely administer traditional, in-person, lab instruction on a limited basis.  As the county moved to the next step in opening up, we are expecting clinical opportunities to start returning as well. We are in contact with all our clinical partners and are closely monitoring the situation. We are optimistic that soon we will be able to share more details.

It goes without saying that we look forward to welcoming all of you back to our campus in the near future.  Until that day comes, please be well and stay safe.  You and your families are constantly in our prayers.

The Bill of Rights (Amendments 1 to 10)


The amendments that became the Bill of Rights were actually the last ten of the twelve amendments proposed in 1789. Here are 5 of the first 10 Bill of Rights that are well-known and cornerstones of our democracy:

  • First Amendment: addresses the rights of freedom of religion (prohibiting Congressional establishment of a religion over another religion through Law and protecting the right to free exercise of religion), freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of assembly, and freedom of petition.
  •  Second Amendment: guarantees the right of individuals to possess firearms.
  •  Fourth Amendment: guards against searches, arrests, and seizures of property without a specific warrant or a &/blog/category/career-services/feed/8220;probable cause&/blog/category/career-services/feed/8221; to believe a crime has been committed. Some rights to privacy have been inferred from this amendment and others by the Supreme Court.
  •  Sixth Amendment: guarantees a speedy public trial for criminal offenses. It requires trial by a jury, guarantees the right to legal counsel for the accused, and guarantees that the accused may require witnesses to attend the trial and testify in the presence of the accused. It also guarantees the accused a right to know the charges against him.
  •  Seventh Amendment: assures trial by jury in civil cases.

Subsequent Amendments (11 to 27)


Amendments to the Constitution after the Bill of Rights cover many subjects. The majority of the seventeen later amendments stem from continued efforts to expand individual civil or political liberties, while a few are concerned with modifying the basic governmental structure drafted in Philadelphia in 1787. Here are 5 significant amendments beginning with the abolition of slavery in our country:

  •  Thirteenth Amendment (1865): Abolishes slavery and authorizes Congress to enforce abolition.
  •  Fifteenth Amendment (1870): Forbids the federal government and the states from using a citizen&/blog/category/career-services/feed/8217;s race, color, or previous status as a slave as a qualification for voting.
  •  Nineteenth Amendment (1920): Prohibits the federal government and the states from forbidding any citizen to vote due to their sex.
  •  Twenty-second Amendment (1951): Limits president to two terms.
  •  Twenty-sixth Amendment (1971): Prohibits the federal government and the states from forbidding any citizen of age 18 or greater to vote on account of their age.

Constitution DayThe History of Constitution Day


Citizens of the United States have celebrated Independence Day and Presidents&/blog/category/career-services/feed/8217; Day since the 1870s, and in 2005, the nation began to celebrate Constitution Day. Also know as Citizenship Day, Constitution Day is an American holiday honoring the day 39 delegates to the Constitutional Convention signed the United States Constitution. This historic date was September 17, 1787.

In 1939, the New York City news tycoon William Randolph Hearst suggested the creation of a holiday to celebrate American citizenship. Not only did Hearst have a wide readership of his many daily newspapers, but he had significant political connections, and in 1940, Congress designated the third Sunday in May as &/blog/category/career-services/feed/8220;I am an American Day.&/blog/category/career-services/feed/8221; President Harry Truman present the resolution, setting aside this date in honor of the American people, especially those who had recently become citizens of the United States.

The holiday quickly gained support and popularity through the efforts of the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service. Additionally, in 1944, Hearst sponsored a 16 minute film titled I Am an American, which was featured in American theaters, and subsequently became a top news story. It was an immediate hit. Within 5 years, the governors of the existing forty-eight states had issued state proclamations in agreement with the national holiday.

One of the most significant individuals in the development of the holiday was a Louisville, Ohio resident named Olga T. Weber. In 1952, she petitioned the leaders of the municipality to change the date of the holiday to correspond with the anniversary of the signing of the United States Constitution. Once they agreed to it, she didn&/blog/category/career-services/feed/8217;t stop there, and took her requests to the State, who also approved. In 1953, Olga went to United States Congress, and both the Senate and the House of Representatives approved her requests. The original resolution was overturned and a new law took its place. After Dwight D. Eisenhower signed it, the &/blog/category/career-services/feed/8220;I am an American Day&/blog/category/career-services/feed/8221; observation became &/blog/category/career-services/feed/8220;Citizenship Day&/blog/category/career-services/feed/8221; and moved to September 17.

Louisville, Ohio was the first city in the United States to celebrate Citizenship Day on September 17, 1952.

Another important figure in the creation of Constitution Day is Louise Leigh. Leigh, after taking a course in Constitutional History with the National Center for Constitutional Studies, was inspired to spread her newfound love of the Constitution throughout the country. In 1997, she founded a nonprofit organization called Constitution Day, Inc. to help encourage recognition of the importance of this national holiday.

Through her efforts,  became an official holiday alongside Citizenship Day in 2004 when, with the help of support from Senator Robert Byrd, the &/blog/category/career-services/feed/8220;Constitution Day&/blog/category/career-services/feed/8221; amendment to the Omnibus Spending Bill passed. In May 2005, the United States Department of Education backed the law when it announced that it would apply to any school receiving federal funds of any kind.

The two allowances of the law were that the head of every federal agency provide each employee with educational materials concerning the Constitution on 17th of September and that each educational institution which receives Federal funds should hold a program for students every Constitution Day.

 

The Constitution


Constitution Day, along with Independence Day and Presidents&/blog/category/career-services/feed/8217; Day, is an important part of the cultural heritage of the United States of America, because it recognizes the value of the American experiment, and the success of a nation of free people whose rights and liberties are protected by a written Constitution.

The Constitution consists of a preamble, seven original articles, twenty-seven amendments, and a paragraph certifying its enactment by the constitutional convention.

The Constitution of the United States of America is the supreme law of the United States. It is the foundation and source of the legal authority underlying the existence of the United States of America and the Federal Government of the United States. It provides the framework for the organization of the United States Government and for the relationship of the Federal government to the States, to citizens, and to all people within the United States.

The Constitution defines the three main branches of government: a legislature, consisting of the House of Representatives and the Senate; an executive branch led by the President; and a judicial branch headed by the Supreme Court. The Constitution outlines the powers and duties of each branch.

The United States Constitution was adopted on September 17, 1787, 224 years ago, by the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and ratified by conventions in each U.S. state in the name of &/blog/category/career-services/feed/8220;The People&/blog/category/career-services/feed/8221;. The Constitution has been amended twenty-seven times; the first ten amendments are known as the Bill of Rights.

The United States Constitution is the shortest and oldest written constitution in the world.

The Constitution has a central place in United States law and political culture. The handwritten, original document is on display at the National Archives and Records Administration in Washington, D.C.

Hello, is it a career you&/blog/category/career-services/feed/8217;re looking for?

51勛圖 and Career Services hosted its semi-annual Career Fair exactly a month ago!  On February 27th from 12 PM to 2 PM, SoCal healthcare February 2018 Career Fair  51勛圖employers met with students and answered their questions.  Many employers were looking to hire graduates and interview for internships from CBDs seven in-demand programs.

Candidates registered and waited anxiously for their turn to showcase their skills.  Students from the different programs dressed in their best scrubs or interview attire with their well-worked r矇sum矇s in hand.  Career Services was present to offer aid in finding survival jobs as well as r矇sum矇 writing assistance.  Any student may bring any r矇sum矇 they already have (or do not have), and either work from the ground up or make revisions as necessary by making an appointment.  They even do r矇sum矇 printing in-house for students who need it.

Seven companies attended the Career Fair, with a few representing each program.  This included employers looking to hire newer students for internships and recent graduates to begin their career path.  The employers filled the entire space of the GE Room, explaining their companys values and mission, as well as information on open positions.  A few employers brought giveaways, mints, and candies for students who took a special interest in their booth.  This was a crucial chance for students to dive in and meet future employers and get a taste of the job search process.  Two students have already received job offers!

Students Affairs also had a spot reserved to help current and graduated students with family and child care, counseling, and housing resources. Current students were also able to apply for the new Student Ambassador Program.   Those interested may still apply to Student Affairs or their Program Directors.

Career Services would like to thank the employers and students who came out to this Februarys Career Fair.  The event was a huge success with interviews and information sessions, and with resounding appreciation from 51勛圖&/blog/category/career-services/feed/8217;s students.  Career Services is looking forward to another successful turnout of students and employers for the next Fair this summer, May 22nd from 12 PM- 2 PM.

What is your role here at 51勛圖 Career Services?

Im a Career Services Officer for Medical Assisting (MA) and Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS), and Im the MA Externship coordinator. In Career Services, we help make sure your r矇sum矇 looks professional and ready to go so you can get hired.  When I call the employers, the first thing I ask is, Are you looking for hires?  If they say yes providing the candidate has professional and customer service skills theyll offer them a job.  Ninety days after, our graduates are getting health insurance and 401k informationfor some its their first time.

I help the MA program in finding sites for them to complete their 200 hours.  This gives them the opportunity, especially for our MAs, to get hired and continue their education.  I tell them, Spread your wings and fly away 51勛圖 will give you the foundation, and what you do with that information and those skills is up to you.  Become an RN, an LVN, or an administrator! You wont stop here.

I also work closely with DMS.  Once they become registered (RDMS), they can work in hospitals and theres more money involved.  That process is a little bit longer, but we want them to start a career as an RDMS.  That requires 600 hours at externship, and I work closely with the Program Director and the site to make that happen.

How can Career Services help me with my job and externship search?


You have to be on board with mock Interviews, people skills, and soft skills.  My job is to prepare you from externship to placement.  When youre out there interviewing, it reflects on 51勛圖.  The more you prepare yourself, the better your chances are for landing better interviews and getting the job at your dream facility Cedars Sinai, UCLA, who doesnt want a paycheck thats signed from UCLA?  At 51勛圖, we have so many career and interview resources, so utilize them!  Our officers have access and experience in what employers are looking for when hiring.  Even if youve graduated already, and have been working for a year, send me an updated r矇sum矇 with your new skills and well start sending you out.  You dont need an appointment, my door is always open.

What are the basic characteristics that employers are looking for from someone who just graduated?

Employers are looking for someone who is good at multi-tasking and someone that can show them the skills theyve learned.  Most people cant do that.  Theyre also looking for professionalism, integrity, and someone who wants a job for the long-term.  When employers are hiring, theyre also looking for someone who is a team player.

What should I start doing today to land the dream job tomorrow?

Like I told someone earlier this week, you need to ask yourself why you picked this program over another program?  You have to have a why.  That why will take you to the next level.  What in your life inspired you to help others, and why did you choose 51勛圖? The techniques and tools we teach and provide here help you master your job and navigate you through your career.  Thats what is going to make you stand out.  You have to show how youll be the best candidate for the job.  Own your true weaknesses and explain what youre doing to make yourself better.

What excites you about helping 51勛圖 Students get placed?

Getting students hired is the reason Im here! It doesnt matter what program it is, I want them to start their career.  I want them to continue to be better.

Do you have any advice for potential students interested in pursuing a career in the healthcare industry?

Go with the passion.  You need to know that if you want to do Medical Assisting, it needs to show.  When youre out on externship, you need to be saying to yourself 200 hours is not enough!  If its the instrumentation, then maybe Surgical Tech is for you.  There are so many options, so make sure youre passionate about the one you choose.

What is your role here at 51勛圖 Career Services?

My role here at 51勛圖 is a dual role.  Im both the  Director of Students Affairs and Career Services.  Both are very fun and important.  My role as Director of Career Services is to ensure everything at the end of the students education cycle here at CBD is going efficiently, whether its part of their clinical experience (i.e., medical offices, large hospitals) or their placement.  What we like to stress is as a graduate from 51勛圖, you have our services for life.  If they would like to switch emphasis or mode of practice, they can always reach out to anyone in Career Services.  As we get leads for entry level, we also get leads for years of experience.  Thats a perfect point for us to reach out to our alumni.

How can Career Services help me with my job and internship search?

If youre a student and need a survival job, we can assist with linking you with part-time employment.  When it comes to the clinical and externship experience, each student really needs to work with their clinical coordinator within their individual program.   Theyre the subject matter experts.  We do try to match students with a site thats close to home, depending on availability.

What are the basic characteristics that employers are looking for from someone who just graduated?

Passion and drive, at the end of the day, are what will lead any student or graduate to employment. Any employer that reaches out to us knows that any resumes they receive from us will be for an entry-level position, one that comes with no or very little medical experience.  Whatever you put forward is what youre going to receive.  We can help you, but we also need to make sure the effort is reciprocated.

What should I start doing today to land the dream job tomorrow?

Your clinical and externship experience should be treated as if youre a full-time employee.  They might hire you right off of externship, and if not, your supervisor could write a great reference letter for you regarding your skills.  Make a direct impact with that direct supervisor and make sure they know your strengths.  They can become a professional reference for you.  You can (and should) have those reference letters in-hand at your interviews.

Make sure, as well, if youre not comfortable in an interview setting, to come prepared to mock interviews, which is part of the Career Edge program here at 51勛圖, and familiarize yourself with the Career Edge modules.  Well set up a mock interview that you have less interaction with for a more realistic interview.  Be aware of how youre presenting yourself and branding yourself.  If that in-person interview turns into a working interview, and they want to test you in an exam room or OR on a mock patient, are you able to switch to that very quickly and not get flustered by it?

Know the skill set you bring to the table, from the textbook to anything you practice in the field.  You know how to do what you need to do.  Theyre not expecting a 5 year veteran of the medical field, simply someone who can show that theyre passionate enough to grow, adapt, and be a better clinician.

What excites you about helping 51勛圖 Students get placed?

The most exciting time for me is Graduation. Many times a graduate will start working in the field and we wont hear from them for a while, so its always nice to  see how successful theyve been, the strides theyve taken, and how proud their support system is of them parents, spouses, children.  Its seeing that anything in life is achievable whether youre straight out of high school, after a traditional degree, or later on in life.  Its never too late to educate yourself and be passionate about what you want to do.

Do you have any advice for potential students interested in pursuing a career in the healthcare industry?

My only advice would be to know where you want to be at the end of the day.  Do your research before you pick your path.  Look at the program and your interests within the program, and understand what the outcomes lead to: salary, job satisfaction, relocating.  This is the first step.

My primary role is to help students in their professional development and get them ready for an externship, i.e., knowing the ins and outs of how to be a working professional beyond their special hands-on skills. How can Career Services help me with my job and internship search?

If you really take Career Edge seriously, it definitely can prepare you for the key factors youll need in order to be successful in the working world.  Here at 51勛圖, we have all our accreditations, which is great because you have all the hands-on skills to be what you want to be in your specialty. However, you also need to know how to be in the working world and know the rules and regulations and the unspoken language in the office setting, so you can be successful in your craft.  What we help you with is getting your targeting r矇sum矇, cover letter, thank you letter, reference page, and electronic portfolio all finalized and ready before you go off to externship.

What are the basic characteristics that employers are looking for from someone who just graduated?

Theyre looking for a person who is determined, a self starter.  The concept of you being willing to be trained is really important.  They need someone who isnt coming in with a closed mind and takes the feedback and experience theyve had here at 51勛圖 and on externship as a tool not the be-all-end-all so that they can adapt to their office culture.  Many times the reason why people arent successful or why they leave is that of the office culture, not just the job itself.  Theyre looking at your energy and personality to balance their team.  They also like knowing youre uptodate in your current skills;  you should meet the minimum requirement of knowledge, or if you dont they should be able to teach and train you to do it.

What should I start doing today to land the dream job tomorrow?

Make sure youre building a great relationship with Career Services.  Its really important that from the very beginning, even on your first day, that you make sure we know who you are and that were utilizing your interests, where you live, etc.  Every school has a Career Services department, but many students dont visit based on fear or not knowing what we can help you with.  You may know what specialty youre interested in, but we can help you channel your unique qualities within that specialty and find you the right fit with your criteria.

What excites you about helping 51勛圖 Students get placed?

I love seeing students thrive in the working world.  Unfortunately, many of us come from the environment where we may not have a corporate or medical background, so the fact that students can walk away with the tools to be successful and use them as life skills is exciting.  These skillsets are useful no matter where they work.

Who has been your greatest inspiration or mentor?

My mentor is Professor Bernadine Brodice, one of my freshman college professors.  She is an amazing individual, a black woman from the segregated south, and she had such a great energy and passion.  She owned her craft when it came to teaching.  She inspired me to push myself and grow, not just take the easy way out.  The fact that shes 80 years old and still teaching and doing public speaking has shown me that the skys the limit.

Do you have any advice for potential students interested in pursuing a career in the healthcare industry?

Make sure that you really build your network here.  Dont wait until your externship.  Youre here with other students who will be in the healthcare field and they can be a connection for you.  Diploma, degree, it doesnt matter.  Theyll be working somewhere.  If youre connected with them and their hospital is hiring who do you think theyll call?  Networking is key, so start at 51勛圖.

What is your title within 51勛圖 Career Services and what does that entail for our students?

Im a Career Services officer. As a Career Services, I help assist in your professional development as well as your job search after you graduate.  That includes resume writing, interview skills, and how to navigate through professional social networks.  We also go over how to dress for success and how to be successful in the workplace.

How can Career Services help our Students with your job and internship search?

Career Services can help you gain all of the transferable skills that you need in not just applying for a job, but once you get the job interview as well as on the job.  We guide you through things like setting up your resume and cover letter, things that you should and should not say during your interview, how you dress as well as once you get the interview, then &/blog/category/career-services/feed/8211; once you get the job &/blog/category/career-services/feed/8211; how to negotiate your salary and other questions to ask, and then &/blog/category/career-services/feed/8211; once you start  working &/blog/category/career-services/feed/8211; getting professional development skills that will allow you to be an excellent employee deserving of a promotion, raise, or be recognized bycourtney walker your company.

What are the basic characteristics that employers are looking for from someone who just graduated?

For pretty much all of our programs, employers are looking for graduates of these programs.   Theyre also looking for any type of certifications that may be necessary because they want to know that youre proficient with skills related to the medical field.  Peoples lives are in your hands.  It does vary from employer to employer depending on your background.  They like the fact that you may not have too much experience.  They do like the fact that our students are eager to learn and willing to create the type of employee that they need.

What should I start doing today to land the dream job tomorrow?

Youve already made the first step by enrolling in the program!  Aside from excelling in your studies and being sure that youre in good academic standing to graduate, its important that you dont miss class.  Employers do ask if youre tardy or miss class.  You can also set yourself above with any additional volunteerism outside of your externship site, as well as by getting involved in activities on campus.  Students can also set themselves apart by being attentive during their Career Edge classes.  These classes involve information that 51勛圖 acquires directly from our employers.

What excites you about placing 51勛圖 Students?

What excites me about placing students is the satisfaction of knowing that students are seeing a great return on their investment.  They put in the work of completing the program and were able to deliver them the success theyve worked for.  I love the excitement of students landing their first job.  They can be really excited about how much money theyre making and the knowledge theyre applying, and thats satisfaction enough for me.

Who has been your greatest inspiration or mentor?

My greatest inspiration has been watching students overcome the things that may have stopped them from being successful in the past.  Watching them follow through inspires me to keep going.

Do you have any advice for potential students interested in pursuing a career in the healthcare industry?

Do your research.  Find out what type of skills within your personality best match the desired healthcare field.   For instance, an OTA while working with children with autism or behavior disorders, that requires a special type of personality. Surgical Tech, on the other hand, requires very in-depth organizational skills.  Look outside of the box for jobs as well.  Look at all of the possibilities available within that field.
