The Bill of Rights (Amendments 1 to 10)


The amendments that became the Bill of Rights were actually the last ten of the twelve amendments proposed in 1789. Here are 5 of the first 10 Bill of Rights that are well-known and cornerstones of our democracy:

  • First Amendment: addresses the rights of freedom of religion (prohibiting Congressional establishment of a religion over another religion through Law and protecting the right to free exercise of religion), freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of assembly, and freedom of petition.
  •  Second Amendment: guarantees the right of individuals to possess firearms.
  •  Fourth Amendment: guards against searches, arrests, and seizures of property without a specific warrant or a &/blog/category/cbd-gives-back/feed/8220;probable cause&/blog/category/cbd-gives-back/feed/8221; to believe a crime has been committed. Some rights to privacy have been inferred from this amendment and others by the Supreme Court.
  •  Sixth Amendment: guarantees a speedy public trial for criminal offenses. It requires trial by a jury, guarantees the right to legal counsel for the accused, and guarantees that the accused may require witnesses to attend the trial and testify in the presence of the accused. It also guarantees the accused a right to know the charges against him.
  •  Seventh Amendment: assures trial by jury in civil cases.

Subsequent Amendments (11 to 27)


Amendments to the Constitution after the Bill of Rights cover many subjects. The majority of the seventeen later amendments stem from continued efforts to expand individual civil or political liberties, while a few are concerned with modifying the basic governmental structure drafted in Philadelphia in 1787. Here are 5 significant amendments beginning with the abolition of slavery in our country:

  •  Thirteenth Amendment (1865): Abolishes slavery and authorizes Congress to enforce abolition.
  •  Fifteenth Amendment (1870): Forbids the federal government and the states from using a citizen&/blog/category/cbd-gives-back/feed/8217;s race, color, or previous status as a slave as a qualification for voting.
  •  Nineteenth Amendment (1920): Prohibits the federal government and the states from forbidding any citizen to vote due to their sex.
  •  Twenty-second Amendment (1951): Limits president to two terms.
  •  Twenty-sixth Amendment (1971): Prohibits the federal government and the states from forbidding any citizen of age 18 or greater to vote on account of their age.

Constitution DayThe History of Constitution Day


Citizens of the United States have celebrated Independence Day and Presidents&/blog/category/cbd-gives-back/feed/8217; Day since the 1870s, and in 2005, the nation began to celebrate Constitution Day. Also know as Citizenship Day, Constitution Day is an American holiday honoring the day 39 delegates to the Constitutional Convention signed the United States Constitution. This historic date was September 17, 1787.

In 1939, the New York City news tycoon William Randolph Hearst suggested the creation of a holiday to celebrate American citizenship. Not only did Hearst have a wide readership of his many daily newspapers, but he had significant political connections, and in 1940, Congress designated the third Sunday in May as &/blog/category/cbd-gives-back/feed/8220;I am an American Day.&/blog/category/cbd-gives-back/feed/8221; President Harry Truman present the resolution, setting aside this date in honor of the American people, especially those who had recently become citizens of the United States.

The holiday quickly gained support and popularity through the efforts of the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service. Additionally, in 1944, Hearst sponsored a 16 minute film titled I Am an American, which was featured in American theaters, and subsequently became a top news story. It was an immediate hit. Within 5 years, the governors of the existing forty-eight states had issued state proclamations in agreement with the national holiday.

One of the most significant individuals in the development of the holiday was a Louisville, Ohio resident named Olga T. Weber. In 1952, she petitioned the leaders of the municipality to change the date of the holiday to correspond with the anniversary of the signing of the United States Constitution. Once they agreed to it, she didn&/blog/category/cbd-gives-back/feed/8217;t stop there, and took her requests to the State, who also approved. In 1953, Olga went to United States Congress, and both the Senate and the House of Representatives approved her requests. The original resolution was overturned and a new law took its place. After Dwight D. Eisenhower signed it, the &/blog/category/cbd-gives-back/feed/8220;I am an American Day&/blog/category/cbd-gives-back/feed/8221; observation became &/blog/category/cbd-gives-back/feed/8220;Citizenship Day&/blog/category/cbd-gives-back/feed/8221; and moved to September 17.

Louisville, Ohio was the first city in the United States to celebrate Citizenship Day on September 17, 1952.

Another important figure in the creation of Constitution Day is Louise Leigh. Leigh, after taking a course in Constitutional History with the National Center for Constitutional Studies, was inspired to spread her newfound love of the Constitution throughout the country. In 1997, she founded a nonprofit organization called Constitution Day, Inc. to help encourage recognition of the importance of this national holiday.

Through her efforts,  became an official holiday alongside Citizenship Day in 2004 when, with the help of support from Senator Robert Byrd, the &/blog/category/cbd-gives-back/feed/8220;Constitution Day&/blog/category/cbd-gives-back/feed/8221; amendment to the Omnibus Spending Bill passed. In May 2005, the United States Department of Education backed the law when it announced that it would apply to any school receiving federal funds of any kind.

The two allowances of the law were that the head of every federal agency provide each employee with educational materials concerning the Constitution on 17th of September and that each educational institution which receives Federal funds should hold a program for students every Constitution Day.

 

The Constitution


Constitution Day, along with Independence Day and Presidents&/blog/category/cbd-gives-back/feed/8217; Day, is an important part of the cultural heritage of the United States of America, because it recognizes the value of the American experiment, and the success of a nation of free people whose rights and liberties are protected by a written Constitution.

The Constitution consists of a preamble, seven original articles, twenty-seven amendments, and a paragraph certifying its enactment by the constitutional convention.

The Constitution of the United States of America is the supreme law of the United States. It is the foundation and source of the legal authority underlying the existence of the United States of America and the Federal Government of the United States. It provides the framework for the organization of the United States Government and for the relationship of the Federal government to the States, to citizens, and to all people within the United States.

The Constitution defines the three main branches of government: a legislature, consisting of the House of Representatives and the Senate; an executive branch led by the President; and a judicial branch headed by the Supreme Court. The Constitution outlines the powers and duties of each branch.

The United States Constitution was adopted on September 17, 1787, 224 years ago, by the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and ratified by conventions in each U.S. state in the name of &/blog/category/cbd-gives-back/feed/8220;The People&/blog/category/cbd-gives-back/feed/8221;. The Constitution has been amended twenty-seven times; the first ten amendments are known as the Bill of Rights.

The United States Constitution is the shortest and oldest written constitution in the world.

The Constitution has a central place in United States law and political culture. The handwritten, original document is on display at the National Archives and Records Administration in Washington, D.C.

HIV Prevention Study Through Los Angeles LGBTQ Center

The Los Angeles LGBT Center and UCLA are holding a research study for individuals that are 14-24 years old. The purpose of the study is to find the best ways to support youth who are living with or at risk of acquiring HIV.

Participants will receive regular HIV and other STI testing and immediate linkage to healthcare services when necessary.  Additionally, there is a cash incentive of $50 per appointment.

We know that a lack of resources and support can prevent individuals from taking care of their sexual, physical and mental health.  Therefore, we offer supportive services such as group chats with helpful and friendly peers, medication reminders and referrals to social services.  HIV positive individuals will receive additional support in adhering to treatment.  Transportation can be arranged to attend all clinic and research appointments.

keep a breast fundraiser51勛圖 has paired with the Keep A Breast Foundation for the Month of October and spread awareness for breast cancer.  The Keep A Breast Foundation () is a nonprofit organization, based right here out of Los Angeles  Their mission: empower young people around the world with breast health education, advocacy, and support.  They remain in many countries all around the world as well.  As per 51勛圖&/blog/category/cbd-gives-back/feed/8217;s partnership with KAB,  the college pledges to raise $5,000 for the non-profit organization this year.

These unique pieces, The Keep A Breast Foundation Breast Casts, are one-of-a-kind plaster forms that combine sculpture, charity, and artistry. Attend AIDS Walk with 51勛圖!

AIDS Walk
On Sunday, October 15th, 51勛圖 will come together with the compassionate LA community for 2017.   They will be fundraising in an effort to support APLA Health in providing food, housing, medical care and so many other people in need.  Funds will also support the fight to preserve access to health care for all.  During these important weeks of fundraising leading up to the Walk, 51勛圖 invites its family to take part in this challenge and fundraise with us.

Everyone who registers for the AIDS Walk Los Angeles is automatically set up with their own personal fundraising web page.  Walkers can customize their personal page and share text, pictures, and video of the 51勛圖 team via social media.

AIDS Walk Los Angeles 2017 starts and ends in Grand Park, adjacent to the steps of L.A. City Hall.  In its 31 years, AIDS Walk Los Angeles has drawn hundreds of thousands of supporters to walk, and millions more to donate, raising more than $82 million to combat HIV and AIDS.   51勛圖s collective team goal for 2017 is $3,000.

The College is so excited to team up in support of  APLA Health and 20 other L.A. County AIDS service organizations and demonstrate their extraordinary commitment to the community.  There is NO FEE to register for AIDS Walk Los Angeles.

Keep a Breast Visits 51勛圖

On July 26th, 2017,  founder and activist Shaney Jo Darden visited the 51勛圖 campus.  She talked to AM and PM classes about her organization, The Keep a Breast Foundation.  The organization attracts global attention for their innovative methods of reaching a variety of demographics.  However, most importantly, they educate young people. While connecting with the youth, they also advocate breast health and breast cancer awareness.  For students entering the healthcare profession, this topic remains extremely important.

The Keep A Breast Foundation is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to empower people around the world.  They accomplish this mission with breast health, education, and support.  Part of Keep A Breasts advocacy and education includes three  programs: Treasured Chest, Traveling Education Booth (Check Yourself!), and Non Toxic Revolution.

Check Yourself! Program

The Check Yourself! Program aims to encourage young people to perform a monthly self-check. Knowledge is power, and by engaging young people earlierkeep a breast visits cbd college, they can develop healthier habits. It also begins by encouraging men and women to know their bodies.  Check out the free digital app Check Yourself!  There, you can set up monthly reminders to perform your own self-check.

Treasured Chest Program

keep a breast visits cbd collegeThe Keep A Breast Treasured Chest Program (TCP) is KABs signature artistic support program for breast cancer survivors. TCP provides any woman diagnosed with breast cancer an opportunity to document her body and feelings by turning her casted torso into a work of art, like the one Shaney is casting above.  These unique pieces, The Keep A Breast Foundation Breast Casts, are one-of-a-kind plaster forms that combine sculpture, charity, and artistry. They communicate complex emotions about breast health and the female form.  Additionally, this allows the castee to capture a specific point in her breast cancer journey. Casts have been made for celebrities, athlete, musicians, and survivors, and transformed by artists into an expression of inner beauty and experience.

 

NonToxic Revolution

The free TCP kit (found on the KAB website) contains all the materials needed, including an instructional video, to make a treasured chest.

Non Toxic Revolution (NTR) informs, educates, and inspires young people about the dangers of toxic chemicals in their environment and food supplyespecially those linked to the initiation of breast cancer. The NTR program is both an informational resource and a call to action, backed by its own website, www.nontoxicrevolution.org.

NTR uses art, music, and creative messaging to inform, educate, and inspire young people to revolt against the dangers of toxic chemicals in their everyday environment and personal care products. Ultimately, NTR also teaches young people to become their own health advocates, both personally and through activism.

51勛圖s hopes of establishing a long lasting partnership with Keep A Breast begins this October (during Breast Cancer Awareness Month!).  The college will be selling bracelets, t-shirts, and other items for a school donation towards the nonprofit company.  With your donations, 51勛圖 will host a  KAB Breast Cast in the Student Resource Center.  A grant of $5k from 51勛圖 allows Keep a Breast the ability for spreading educational materials.  CBD will help bring community impact where it is needed most to the young people making a difference and saving lives.

51勛圖 Wears Their Heart On Their Sleeves

On Thursday June 15th, 2017, 51勛圖 hosted its June Blood Drive in partnership with the American Red Cross. From 10 AM-4 PM in the Auditorium, students, faculty, staff, and family came in to give blood. The American Red Cross can then use donations for transfusions, platelets, and patients who do not have enough blood to spare. On June 1st, an appointment sign- up sheet circulated the school inviting anyone to pick a slot best for them. This time, the school had a goal: 21 donations.

june blood driveRight now, blood is being distributed faster than its coming in. When processing and testing are done, the American Red Cross distributes and ships donations to hospitals 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Red cell donations only last 42 days, platelets 5 days, and plasma up to a year.

Blood and platelets cannot be manufactured, which is why those in need depend on volunteers. However, less than 38 percent of the population is eligible to give blood or platelets, including the 7% of Americans who have the universal blood type: O negative. Hence, the importance to give when you can.

Altogether, 51勛圖 donated 19 pints of blood, only 2 donations away from their goal. Already, the school has planned their next drive for August 25th, 2017 from 8 AM- 8 PM. Representatives from the school are ready to not only meet their goal but beat it, come August 25th. Sign-up sheets with scheduled times begangoing from classroom to classroom earlier this week. 1. How did you become involved with Keep a Breast? How has it grown or changed over time?

I founded Keep A Breast 17 years ago after a friend, who was her 20s, was diagnosed with breast cancer. Since our inception, Keep A Breast has made connections with younger generations about breast health through music, art, skate, and surf keep a breastculture. We meet young people where they are and we empower them with the education to help them be their own, best advocates.

In many ways, were still the same. Keep A Breast exists because we are called by our community to show up and do what we do. We still work with many of the same friends and supporters that we always have. These days, we have grown so much and I could not be more excited for the future. We have affiliate locations in Europe, Canada, Japan, Chile and Mexico. Now technology plays a huge role in getting our message out there and through our Check Yourself! App we have reached young people in over 100 countries.

2. What differentiates you from other breast cancer awareness organizations?

When I started Keep A Breast I realized that no one was truly reaching young people with breast cancer education and support. Existing organizations were not operating at the cultural level of teens and twenty-somethings. In response, I developed a series of educational programs that attempted to reach youth in their comfort zones. This was the basis of Keep A Breasts interactive teaching efforts such as our Travelling Education Booth and Check Yourself! breast self-check cards. With this, KAB was born. KAB demonstrates a new non-profit model, one that assumes that todays young people are articulate, critical, and ready to establish their identities through meaningful action. They are ready to be engaged and educated and we are so honored to be the ones to spread awareness to them.

3. What is the hardest decision the organization has had to make recently?

I dont personally subscribe to this idea of hard decisions in business. I just dont see it that way. As a non-profit organization, we exist to fulfill our mission. Daily decisions make sure we evolve as we go, and maintain transparency with our donors. Change is exciting and good, and a hard decision usually opens a new door or opportunity that was not there before.

4. What do you, personally, spend most of your time on?

I spend most of my time being awesome and taking care of myself! HA! I wish! In truth, I have to challenge myself to take care of myself daily and walk the talk. I have to do yoga, be mindful and eat well to set a good example for my staff and our audience. I oversee our team globally and help support everyone with their program outreach and goals. Personally, I work on all our partnerships and collaborations daily; from the details of what they will be, to their goals, to the strategy and messaging.

5. I noticed KAB runs three different programs: Check Yourself!, Treasured chest, and Non Toxic Revolution.  Can you touch briefly on what each of those entails and how they accomplish the KAB mission?

Check Yourself!

The Check Yourself! program aims to encourage young people to perform a monthly self-check. With 40% of diagnosed breast cancer being self-detected, establishing what is normal is an important step to knowing your body and knowing when something is wrong. Keep A Breast has always encouraged young people to not only love their boobies, but to know their bodies and be aware of any changes. Knowledge is power. Engaging young people early on, in their environment, is key in helping them develop healthy habits. We deliver this program in three unique ways, through printed education materials, our free digital app, and art exhibitions.

Treasured Chest

The Keep A Breast Treasured Chest Program (TCP) is KABs signature artistic support program for breast cancer survivors. TCP provides any woman diagnosed with breast cancer an opportunity to document her body and feelings by turning her casted torso into a beautiful work of art. These unique pieces, The Keep A Breast Foundation Breast Casts, are one-of-a-kind plaster forms that combine sculpture, charity, and artistry. They communicate complex emotions about breast health and the female form, allowing the castee to capture a specific point in her breast cancer journey. The free TCP kit contains all the materials needed, including an instructional video, to make a treasured chest.

Non Toxic Revolution

Non Toxic Revolution (NTR) informs, educates, and inspires young people about the dangers of toxic chemicals in their environment and food supplyespecially those linked to the initiation of breast cancer. The NTR program is both an informational resource and a call to action, backed by its own website, .

NTR uses art, music, and creative messaging to inform, educate, and inspire young people to revolt against the dangers of toxic chemicals in their everyday environment and personal care products. Moreover, NTR also teaches young people to become their own health advocates, both personally and through activism.

6. How are you really collaborating with other organizations on a local, regional, or national level? What are some examples? How would you like to enhance these efforts?

Its hard to reallllyyyy collaborate with other organizations because of funding. Funding is scarce for all of us which forces us to focus on our own missions. We work with and are friends with many organizations that you should all check out and support.

  • When survivors come to us looking for information at the time of diagnosis and after, we refer them to our friends at Young Survival Coalition and Stupid Cancer who support survivors nationally.
  • We partner with Breast Cancer Prevention Partners. They help us with the science behind our campaigns and we help them spread the word about their actions.
  • We partner with The Environmental Working Group. They also help us with the science behind our campaigns.  We help them create teen versions of their campaigns like the Teen Sunscreen Guide.
  • We are a part of the Plastic Pollution Coalition. We share resources with the other coalition members and collaborate on campaigns regarding single-use plastics.

We would love to increase our efforts to collaborate with other organizations in an advocacy capacity. In our current political state, we believe in the importance of young people&/blog/category/cbd-gives-back/feed/8217;s involvement in shaping their future.  Avocacy remains a crucial step in that. Helping other organizations further their efforts to pass legislation that improves womens health or regulates toxic ingredients is the perfect enhancement of our education, and ultimately our mission.

7. To what degree have you attracted NEW people and new ideas to KAB?

We hope your readers will be inspired and join us as volunteers, interns, bringing new ideas to the organization. We use art to educate and inspire.  We are always looking to connect with a new audience, whether it be race car fans, country music fans, or students. We work with all types of influencers from athletes to celebrities to help us get the word out in an authentic way. We have a fundraising activation called DIY Action, where anyone can throw a fundraiser for Keep A Breast. This has been a great way for KAB to be introduced to all kinds of new audiences in places all over the world. From the craft beer community to the yoga community to even chili enthusiasts.

8. How do you use your funds to help people? What does community impact look like to you?

The funds we receive fund our programs; Check Yourself, Treasured Chest, and Non Toxic Revolution. Based on those programs, community impact can show itself in many forms.

It could be keep a breasta survivor casting her breasts before she has a double mastectomy, expressing all those complex emotions by preserving her form and making it into a work of art, helping her through the changes to come. It could look like a kid on Vans Warped Tour visiting our booth, downloading our app, and telling their friends and family about it. Then a year later, messaging us that their sister found a lump, but caught it early because of our app, and now shes going to just fine. It could be someone taking our Deodorant Challenge, breaking away from a toxic deodorant, and taking that first step to becoming their own health advocate. Ultimately, community impact looks like empowerment to us.  By giving people the knowledge to make choices and adopt healthy habits, they can positively change their lives.

9. How can 51勛圖 get involved and volunteer? How do you support your volunteers?

We look for volunteers and interns all year long for may of our events. You can check out volunteer opportunities on our website or follow us on our social media where we post opportunities. All our volunteers go through onboarding so we get familiar with each other. Our volunteers and interns all become part of the Keep A Breast family for years to come.  We even hire some volunteers and interns.

10. How do you express appreciation? How do you thank people?

We live in gratitude daily and are always expressing our gratitude.  We are blessed to have the opportunity to fulfill our mission. We send thank you emails and cards to our donors. We have appreciation lunches for our volunteers and interns. We couldnt do what we do without the help of many people, and we make sure they know that.

Each Wednesday in the month of April, OTA students took shifts in-between class running a school-wide bake sale. They stocked their cart with treats, snacks, coffee and energy drinks. The totals funds raised from the school by the end of the month totaled $500.

Program Director Mary Kay Wolfe, OTA Student Rep Jake Argyris, and the 51勛圖 Student Affairs team visited Alexandria House May 3rd with their financial gift. 51勛圖 began this journey thinking it a chance to learn more about the transitional residence. They quickly determined a mutual need for a long-lasting relationship.

But what is Alexandria House?

In talking to Founding Director, &/blog/category/cbd-gives-back/feed/8211; who opened Alexandria House in 1996 she revealed the three things for which Alexandria House stands. Firstly, they are a long-term shelter for women and their children. Secondly, they are a neighborhood center with thrift sales, food pantries, and community workshops. Lastly, they strive to educate and advocate for systemic change work, addressing issues that are keeping women in poverty. Their goal remains being intentionally multicultural, feminist, and anti-racist to meet the needs of women who are economically poor. They achieve all this without the help of federal government subsidies.

The State of Homelessness in Los Angeles

As of 2016 (click for the most recent 2017 findings), there are more than 47,000 homeless in Los Angeles. The number of homeless beds diminished from 14,000 to 9,000 in less than five years. While Los Angeles continuously cuts funding to transitional housing and pushes for rapid rehousing, conditions have only gotten worse. The issue, Alexandria House argues, is not just mental illness. Homelessness stems from a lack of affordable housing, while more cuts ensue. Chronic homelessness is, then, ingrained in our society. This makes it harder, especially for battered and multi-racial women, to break the cycle.

Alexandria House: Fighting Back

For these reasons, Alexandria House aims to have a community-based atmosphere for its residents. Judy lives there herself and raised her daughter in Alexandria House. Because the government does not fund Alexandria House, they accept whoever they can. However, residents must attain a job or be in school. In fact, many past residents are 51勛圖 alumni. In the words of one mother, [Alexandria House] is a positive&/blog/category/cbd-gives-back/feed/8230;child-friendly environment. Mothers, sisters and women who are battered, who have be subject to , who have battled with depression while trying to support a family through economic turmoil, who have had what seems like every door slammed in their face, have found a place to call home even if just for a short while.

On-site child care and child therapy provide the chance for mothers to work while at Alexandria House. Support groups, financial literacy, and adult therapy gives the women the opportunity to heal their past. This allows them to move on for their future. More than half of the residents who have transitioned to permanent housing come back to aid current residents with cooking dinner, grocery shopping, gardening, and tutoring. A true sense of community encompasses everything Alexandria House stands for.

As long as there is a need for it, Alexandria House intends to stay open. Conveniently located in Mid-Wilshire, it takes only 15 minutes to walk there from 51勛圖. Alexandria House depends on not just donations, but volunteers. 51勛圖 aspires to create a life-long partnership in this way. American Red Cross Blood Drive Wrap Up

Blood Drive Facts

  • The American Red Cross distributes and ships donations when processing and testing are done. They deliver to hospitals 24 hours a dayand 7 days a week.
  • Right now, blood is being distributed faster than its coming in.
  • Since processed and tested red cell donations only last 42 days, platelets 5 days, and plasma up to a year, it is important for those who can donate to give what they can.
  • Blood and platelets cannot be manufactured, which is why those in need depend on volunteers.

In the US alone, someone needs blood every two seconds. However, less than 38 percent of the population is eligible to give blood or platelets, including the 7% of Americans who have the universal blood type O negative. By donating blood, patrons can help save up to 3 lives. Red cells are used for anemic patients who may need a red cell transfusion. White platelets, also found in the blood, are used on cancer patients as they cannot make their own. Additionally, plasma is also used for clotting and to control bleeding. All together, 51勛圖 donated 21 pints of blood, once again breaking their school record and raising the bar higher for next year.
