Tell us more about yourself & your background?

Hi! My name is Alexis and I am 24. A little about myself and how I got into OTA is when I was 15, I had a traumatic brain injury. I had an Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM) which caused a stroke. I was in an induced coma for about 4 weeks. When I finally woke up, I went to inpatient rehab for 5 weeks. Even after I returned home, I continued outpatient care for another 2 years. After being an athlete and a top student, I was left paralyzed on the right side of my body. I had to relearn all my life skills. I had physical therapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy to help me on my journey to recovery and I appreciate everything they did. Now, I want to express my gratitude and share my motivations for this field.  This life-changing experience will allow me to change and help people recover/live with trauma and disability.

What brought you to 51勛圖 and when did you begin your journey here?

When I knew I want to become a COTA, I did some research on accredited colleges and 51勛圖 was the most accessible to me so I started my journey in October 2021.

What stage are you in your program here at 51勛圖?

I am almost done with module 4. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel and I am so excited to pursue my career.

What do you enjoy most about your program?

I enjoy the people in my program because we all want the same thing, to help people and to improve individual independence. The professors and the 51勛圖 staff are very helpful and they care about our success

What do you find most interesting about your program?

The most interesting thing about my program is all diagnoses and how we can help and support them.

Who or what is your greatest influence or inspiration?

My brother is my inspiration. He knew I would be able to do anything I dreamed of and he always supported me. When my brother passed away, it drove me to pursue my dream of becoming an OTA.

What do you think students should know about 51勛圖s OTA Program?

A couple of things students should know about 51勛圖s OTA Program is you will learn so much. There are many opportunities to participate in many activities throughout this program to connect you with a variety of people and professors to help and support you through the completion of the program.

What advice do you have for future students?

Some advice I would have for future students would be always communicate with your peers and especially professors. Communication is key with your professors. Your professors want you to succeed and they are there to help.

My name is Corynne Ramaker I have an AS in social and behavioral science before I pursued my COTA at CBD. I worked for a city as well as school districts for years which introduced me to occupational therapy and made me fall in love. When searching for schools, I was able to visit and talk to administration and CBD felt the most welcoming and that they genuinely cared and thats why I chose to attend.

Currently, I work in a mental health setting where I am able to engage with patients that may currently be in psychosis, going through substance abuse and other mental illnesses. I facilitate group recreation therapy sessions to reduce anxiety, curate coping skills, express negative emotions, regulate maladaptive behaviors, etc.

Most interesting AND the most fulfilled part of my job are the patients. I get to meet people from all walks of life from age 13 to 99. Building rapport and supporting them in some of their darkest times is the most rewarding thing.

My most memorable moment from CBD is hard to choose. My cohort was the covid lock down cohort so we had to improvise on how we can present projects and make our education work (HUGE thank you to our professors for that). Going through the pandemic and being able to make it to the end with my cohort is the best memory.

I have many incredible people in my life that push me to be better. My family and friends are huge influences on my life. In the OT field, honestly, the professors Ive met at CBD I look up to so much, and still do. They supported me and have inspired me to be the best clinician I can be. Dr. Kokesh and Ms. Park have been the most wonderful teachers. I could name every single professor as well, they all hold a special place in my heart as I continue to grow and accomplish my goals in healthcare, I remember their energy

I feel amazing! I feel like there is SO much more and this is just the beginning. I absolutely love mental health but my long term goal is to get into acute care. I want to help as many people as I possibly can.

Students should know that all of the work you are given, will come in handy. Every single thing that Ive learned has shaped my into a well rounded COTA with the confidence to excel in any setting.

My advice would be to be open minded, go for your dream setting but you might actually love a different one. You will find a job and you will make an impact.

Student Spotlight &/blog/category/student-spotlight/feed/8211; Naira Yengibaryan, Surgical Technology Program

Tell us more about yourself & your background?

My name is Naira Yengibaryan. I am from Armenia.I moved to the United States in 2016. I worked as a Surgical Tech in Armenia for 10 years and after I moved to the US I had to start over and study so hard to get my license here. So, I am here now at CBD college and I am so glad that I chose this college.

What brought you to 51勛圖 and when did you begin your journey here?

I began my journey on April 4,  2021. I chose CBD college because I was supporting myself, and I wanted a college that was both flexible and affordable. While I was attending classes, I was also working 20 hours a week, but I still managed to get my associate degree in 18 months.

What stage are you in your program here at 51勛圖?

I am currently into eleventh week of my clinicals. I have less than two months to finish my journey.

What do you enjoy most about your program?

I think what I most enjoyed about the program was learning. I acquired a vast amount of knowledge and hands-on experience in the laboratories and in the clinical site.

What do you find most interesting about your program?

The most interesting thing in my program is learning everything about the human body and knowing how it works (muscles, joints, organs, bones, veins. etc.,)

Who or what is your greatest influence or inspiration?

My greatest influence is my Mom.

What do you think students should know about 51勛圖s ST Program?

Every student should know that this program is for those who have no fears, who believe that he or she has a strong personality and strong will to help people.

What advice do you have for future students?

Believe in yourself. Keep Your Goal in Mind. Take the initiative to start pursuing your education, stay focused and make sure you complete your goal. Set up adequate time for homework, study, sleep, relationships, and work. You need not always finish every task all at once and always take notes.

Student Spotlight &/blog/category/student-spotlight/feed/8211; Liliane Tran, MRI Program

Tell us more about yourself & your background?

  • I have a bachelors in psychology and research background in neuropsychology, specifically, sensation and perception, facial recognition, and learning and memory. My current goals include continuing to help others, expanding my research experience, and understanding the underlying mechanisms behind substance abuse/addiction. I decided to get into MRI with the interest of specializing in fMRI for clinical studies in psychopharmacology.

What brought you to 51勛圖 and when did you begin your journey here?

  • I started August of 2021 and chose 51勛圖 since their MRI program had good reviews, all online (worked with my schedule), and was one of the most affordable programs in my area.

What stage are you in your program here at 51勛圖?

  • I am currently finishing up my third module and about 3 months into clinicals.

What do you enjoy most about your program?

  • What I enjoy most about this program is the hands-on experience I am getting at clinicals and seeing my progression as I begin to feel more comfortable with more advanced scans.

What do you find most interesting about your program?

  • The most interesting thing about my program is the exposure to so many different scans. I was fortunate enough to be placed at a site that gets a lot of unusual cases so days here are never mundane.

Who or what is your greatest influence or inspiration?

  • My greatest influence is Hamilton Morris.

What do you think students should know about 51勛圖s MRI Program?

  • Something students should know about this program is that it is focused around the ARRT which is a more recognized exam and makes you more marketable. Since the exam is physics heavy, this program breaks down the physics into three separate classes which gives students more time to focus and review.

What advice do you have for future students?

  • My advice to future students is making sure they do not underestimate how much time this program demands in order to succeed. I recommend dedicating a lot of time into studying, using all the resources this program provides, and applying that knowledge into clinicals. Being able to show how much you already know, are able to adapt quickly, and committed to being there will not go unnoticed and could lead to employment opportunities at your site.

Meet Patrice Alexander, OTA Student!

Tell us more about yourself, your background and what brought you to 51勛圖.patrice alexander ota student

I remember when I first inquired about the OTA program, I met with Cecily. I felt welcomed and was given a tour the day I walked in. The admissions office was very helpful in answering all of my questions. I also chose CBD for it convenient location.

How did you decide to pursue OTA?

In my previous position as a rehab recruiter, I had the pleasure to shadow in a rehab gym for a few hours. After seeing the interaction between the Occupational Therapist and the patients I grew more interested in the field. After learning more about what Occupational Therapy was, I determined that role of Occupational Therapy aligned with the passion that I have to help others.

Who is your favorite instructor at CBD?

Honestly, it would be very hard to pick one! It is not common that you find so many great instructors in one school, let alone one program. The instructors are well educated on the practice of OT and have tons of experience to top it off. I love that each instructor incorporates their own professional experience to teach lesson plans.

What is your most difficult class at CBD?

The most difficult class for me was Anatomy and Physiology. This was a new subject for me and I was not familiar with the complex systems of the body. The class required A LOT of memorization. After establishing good study habits and participating in study groups within my class. I was able to get through the class much easier.

What would you tell anyone who is interested in becoming an OTA?

It is the best decision you could ever make! I spent years trying to figure out what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. The moment I found out about what Occupational Therapy was and did some shadowing my mind was made. I do recommend that you shadow an OT or OTA to get an idea of what occupational therapy is.

Where do you work outside of school?

I currently work in a hospital in the food and nutrition department. The most enjoyable part of my job is interacting with patients and making their stay as comfortable as possible.

Is it hard to balance work, study, and family?

Yes! But it is possible. I did not start working until module 4, and I only work the weekends. Time management is everything when you are in a program like this. School became my main priority. It took a lot of time, motivation and dedication to come this far. You have to keep in mind that you are working hard to better your future. You may struggle a bit to find a balance but it is possible.

What are your favorite things to do outside of the classroom?

This program has kept me very busy so in my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my family and boyfriend.

When is your expected graduation date?

January 2019

Why would you recommend someone to choose CBD?

This is my second time attending college. My first experience was in a community college. I took several classes and realized not only was there a lack of guidance from faculty and counselors but teachers barely know your name. The class sizes of the OTA program are small enough that teachers actually have a chance to learn about their students.

Before you go, would you like to give a shout out to anyone?

I would love to give a shout out to my loving and supportive boyfriend, my family and Cohort 6 as we have become a big family through this journey.

My mom has worked for the Veterans Affairs Hospital as an ophthalmologist technician in the eye clinic since I was a young girl.泭 Each year, the VA would host a take your kid to work day, which was something I looked forward to every year and always participated in.泭 I remember leaving the hospital thCourtney Clarkose days hoping that I would get to go to work every day like my mom and love what I do. Being around the hospital environment guided my direction towards DMS.

Sonography has specifically stuck out to me in many ways.泭 I knew I wanted to assist in patients care in a way that the patient would not be able to.泭 Producing diagnostic images is the perfect way for me to accomplish this.泭 Sonography also fascinates me because I can perform a wide array of tests.泭 From OB/GYN to vascular, ultrasounds can detect anomalies that can lead to a diagnosis without entering the body.泭 Being hands on with the patient is my ultimate goal.

Why did you choose 51勛圖?

The main reason why I chose 51勛圖 is its CAAHEP accreditation.泭 Being that only a handful of colleges within California have this accreditation, this ensured me that CBDs high quality would provide me with substantial education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography. 泭I also chose CBD because of the friendly staff and community who welcomed me with when inquiring about the school.泭 My admissions representative, Christian Dominguez, guided me along the process of enrollment and aided with any questions I had about the school or program in an exceptionally smooth manner. Upon completing my required classes at CBD, Im eligible for a 6-month full-time externship position.

Who is your favorite instructor at CBD?

My favorite instructor was my previous physics professor, Mr. K.

Physics has always been a challenging subject for me, one that I did not enjoy. However, once entering Mr. Ks class I finally felt like physics clicked for me.泭 He made it interesting and fun, and that is something for which I will always be grateful!

What is your most difficult class at CBD?

The most difficult class throughout this program was abdomen. My classmates and I first learned protocols and became introduced to scanning organs in Abdomen.泭 The material for the course was also very challenging, but I learned more than I ever thought possible within a 3-month time span.

What would you tell anyone who is interested in becoming a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer?

If they&/blog/category/student-spotlight/feed/8217;re interested in DMS, they should be interested in anatomy, physiology, physics, and vasculature.泭 My advice about entering the program would be to use lab time wisely and scan as much as possible.泭 Becoming a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer is a skill that is acquired throughout time and practice, along with being knowledgeable in these subjects.

What things do you do beyond of the classroom? 泭Do you have a job work outside of school?

I am a part-time nanny for a 2-year-old boy.泭 Outside of working, class, studying, and friends, I participate in yoga, Frisbee golf, hiking, and dancing. I also enjoy going to concerts, beach days, and exploring Los Angeles.

Whats the most rewarding thing about balancing work, study, and family?

The most rewarding thing about balancing this program with work, family, and friends would be the feeling of accomplishment and importance at the end of each day.泭 This profession will allow me to make an impact in each patients life by providing the best possible images. Knowing that I will make a difference in the world of healthcare is enough to fulfill me professionally.

What excites you about going on externship?

Going into externship I am most excited about finally using the knowledge and skills I have gained throughout the class and putting it to the test.泭 Being that I am a hands on learner, I am eager to continue my education through real patients and experiences.

Why would you recommend someone to choose CBD?

51勛圖 has provided me with an exceptional education that has set me up for success within this field.泭 I also would recommend it because of the tight knit community that I was able to be a part of while attending this college. Being that I moved to California from Wisconsin for this program, I do not have family near me.泭 Attending CBD, I have made connections with professors, students, and advisors that are like family to me.泭 Thats a blessing in itself.

Before you go, would you like to give a shout out to anyone?

Shout out to our program advisor, Josefina Delgado who is always there for any concern, question, or mental support needed.泭 She has guided me throughout this program, making me feel comfortable and important no matter how big or small my concern was, and to her, I would like to say thank you!
